Dive computer marketing is a specification arms race, and almost none of it matters for your first one.

Here is the short version: four things matter, everything else is noise, and the most important of the four is whether you can read it.

Why you need one

A dive computer continuously tracks your actual depth and time and calculates your remaining no-decompression limit from your real profile — rather than from the worst-case rectangular profile that tables assume.

In practice that means:

  • You get more usable bottom time on a realistic multi-level dive
  • Your ascent rate is monitored and you are warned when it is too fast
  • Repetitive dives are tracked automatically across the day
  • Your dive history is logged

The repetitive-dive tracking is why this matters so much in Lebanon specifically. A typical local dive day is a deep wreck followed by a shallower second dive, and the computer carries your loading between the two.

The four things that matter

1. Can you read it?

This is genuinely the top criterion and it is the one specification sheets do not capture.

At 35 metres, in Mediterranean water that has lost most of its light, possibly in reduced visibility, with cold hands, you need to see depth, no-decompression time remaining, and elapsed time at a glance.

Test it in the shop. Hold it at arm's length. Squint. If you are hesitating, it is the wrong computer.

Big digits beat lots of digits. A cluttered display with twelve fields is worse than a clear one with four.

2. Nitrox capability

Non-negotiable. Get one that supports enriched air and can be set to your analysed mix.

In Lebanon this matters sooner than most places, because nitrox is genuinely useful on the 35–40 metre wrecks. A computer without it will need replacing.

3. Battery

User-replaceable is best. You can change it yourself, or anywhere, without shipping the unit.

Rechargeable is fine if you are organised about it.

Sealed batteries requiring factory service are a problem in a small market. If the unit has to go abroad for a battery change, that is weeks without a computer.

4. A clear ascent rate indicator

Ascending too fast is one of the more common contributors to decompression problems, and it is entirely within your control. A computer that shows your ascent rate clearly — a bar, a graphic, an unmissable warning — makes you a better diver. One that shows a small number you have to interpret does not.

What does not matter for a first computer

Air integration. Convenient, adds cost and complexity, and you still carry a mechanical gauge as backup. Spend the money on the display instead.

Compass. Nice, rarely as good as a real compass, and you should carry a separate one anyway.

Bluetooth and app logging. Pleasant. Not a safety feature. Do not choose on this.

Multiple algorithms and deep-stop options. For your first computer, the manufacturer's default with a conservatism setting is entirely adequate. You are not going to make a better choice than the default until you understand decompression theory well enough not to need this article.

Technical features — trimix, closed-circuit support, multiple gas switching. If you get to technical diving, you will buy a different computer then. That is years away and the technology will have moved.

Colour screens. Genuinely easier to read in some conditions, and a real cost premium. Optional, not required.

Conservatism

Most computers let you adjust how conservative the calculation is.

Worth doing, and dialling it up is worth considering if any of these apply: you are over 40, carrying extra weight, dehydrated, cold, tired, diving repetitively over multiple days, or flying soon after.

In Lebanon, cold at depth and multi-dive days both apply routinely. A slightly more conservative setting costs you a few minutes and buys real margin.

When to buy

Before your first deep dives. In practice that means before advanced training, or immediately after it.

Not before your Open Water course — rental units are included and you have enough new things to think about.

Buying one in Lebanon

Computers are one of the few items where buying abroad is defensible, since fit is not a factor. But weigh two things:

Battery and service support. Ask what is practical locally before choosing a brand.

Warranty. A local purchase means a local conversation if something fails. An international one means shipping.

Ask your dive centre what the instructors actually use. In a small market that answer already accounts for battery availability and servicing, which is exactly the information a specification comparison will not give you.

The one-line summary

Buy the cheapest computer with a display you can read instantly, nitrox support, a battery you can deal with locally, and a clear ascent alarm. Ignore everything else on the box.
